This can be a tough question but it’s one I’m immensely curious about.
We’ve all lived such different lives that what we consider to be the best advice will never be the same for everyone. It might have been an off-hand comment that resonated, an experience that touched you deeply or a cross roads moment where someone said exactly what you needed to hear at that time.
I’d have to say for me that in recent years the best advice I received, is to get really clear about what you want. If you don’t have a definitive goal or dream that you’re working towards then you’ll probably find yourself drifting along wishing your time away, looking forward to the next weekend, evening out or holiday but without a real sense of purpose or direction.
I know because that’s what my life was like. Until I was lucky enough to work on a project that challenged, motivated and inspired me and taught me what was possible.
That project was about 15 years ago, and for a few years my work life was incredibly rewarding. But I wasn’t in control and I wasn’t planning for my own future.
Like most of us, I had an annual appraisal that covered organisational objectives but work was something that happened to me. And because I didn’t know any different, I let it. Sometimes it was challenging and positive and sometimes it wasn’t. I thought that was just how it was. It seemed to be what most people around me were doing the same anyway.
Then I was made redundant and I realised that I needed to learn fast how to work out what to do and that started with understanding what I wanted. I hired a great coach and began to plan out what I wanted and started to take action.
Today I’ve been a coach for 5 years and my clients now receive the benefit of all that I’ve learnt. We all have different goals and dreams and I love working with others to help them discover their own direction and purpose.
If this is something that resonates with you then get in touch with me to see where I can help you work out what it is you truly want.
